A PACKED crowd at M|Arts heard Griffith Review founder Julianne Shultz and author Judith White discuss how to live through political chaos at the latest Politics of Life event.<\/p>\n
The speakers unpacked the implications of global crises, including the US election, highlighting the need for solidarity and community in turbulent times.<\/p>\n
Professor Richard Hil told the audience that authoritarianism thrives on division and isolation.<\/p>\n
“In these uncertain and troubling times, one way of bringing people together is by being prepared to talk with others about the things that worry us,” Hil said.<\/p>\n
“POL is about creating a community of people prepared to discuss critical ideas and insights that help us to make sense of our individual and collective circumstances.<\/p>\n
“We’re all impacted by global crises, which are set to worsen.<\/p>\n
“We’ll need a greater sense of togetherness and a stronger civic society to get on top of the challenges<\/p>\n
“The worst thing we can do is to retreat into isolationism.<\/p>\n
“POL is about building community, gaining insights, sharing ideas and having a thoroughly enjoyable time in the company of others.”<\/p>\n
POL committee member Maria Barbieri said the atmosphere had been lively.<\/p>\n
“However, when the conversation on stage started, you could have heard a pin drop,” Barbieri said.<\/p>\n
“Everyone became very focused.<\/p>\n
“The conversation was of the highest standard in public debate.<\/p>\n
“It is crucial to foster a strong and frank public debate on issues that affect us all, to share thoughts and feelings, and to find solutions to our collective problems.”<\/p>\n
Local resident Lynne Kohler said she had been hesitant to attend at first.<\/p>\n
“I’d built in an early exit plan as I was still reeling from the US election and couldn’t bear the thought of discussing politics,” Kohler said.<\/p>\n
“But my mood lifted immediately<\/p>\n
“The venue was packed, we were warmly welcomed.<\/p>\n
“It seemed the whole town was there, and the vibe was electric.<\/p>\n
“The focus of the evening was how we live our best lives during chaos, and I felt buoyed and energised.<\/p>\n
“I’m thrilled to hear that there will be many more of these events to come.”<\/p>\n
