{"id":103946,"date":"2024-12-31T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-12-30T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/?p=103946"},"modified":"2024-12-19T10:53:44","modified_gmt":"2024-12-18T23:53:44","slug":"from-devastation-to-determination-resilience-groups-plan-for-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/news\/from-devastation-to-determination-resilience-groups-plan-for-future\/","title":{"rendered":"From devastation to determination \u2013 resilience groups plan for future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>RESILIENCE groups that formed throughout the Byron Shire in the wake of the 2022 floods are looking for volunteers to help prepare for future natural disasters.<\/p>\n<p>Known as CHUBs (community resilience hubs), the groups are active in areas including Main Arm, South Golden Beach, Wilsons Creek, Federal, Mullumbimby, Bangalow, Minyon (Upper Coopers Creek) and Coorabell.<\/p>\n<p>The volunteer teams include street coordinators whose role involves identifying vulnerable members of the community, such as elderly people and those with a disability, who may need help evacuating in an emergency.<\/p>\n<p>Volunteers are also trained in using communications systems such as portable radios and Starlink satellite services in the event WiFi and mobile networks go down.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/12\/MembersofBangalowRes_71302.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Members of Bangalow Resilience Network with their CB radios. Photo: ANGELA SAURINE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Obviously in the 2022 floods there was a lot of chaos and there were leaders who emerged,&#8221; Byron Shire Council community resilience and recovery coordinator Sarah Boulle said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I started to engage with some of those people during that time and because these groups started up they have joined the Byron Shire Community Resilience Network,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s a formal system behind it, even though they are grassroots organisations doing their own thing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Council provides support to the CHUBs, which work hand in hand with other organisations, such as the State Emergency Services and Rural Fire Service.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2024\/12\/AmemberofWilsonsCree_72498.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"280\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A member of Wilsons Creek Resilience Network testing their Starlink kit.
