T20 Cricket will make its debut at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles and Steve Smith would love to be a part of it.<\/p>\n
While many expect the 35-year-old to retire from international cricket in the coming home summers, the legendary batter is hoping to still be performing at age 39 to put his hand up for Olympic selection.<\/p>\n
With the Los Angeles Games taking place in mid-2028, Smith hopes that things pan out in his favour across the next three and a half years at the top level.<\/p>\n
“I think it’d just be cool to play in the Olympics,” Smith told SEN 1170 Breakfast<\/p>\n
“It’s as simple as that, really. You see the athletes go over there and play the various sports in the Olympics and I always enjoy viewing it.<\/p>\n
“I think it’d be a cool one to be a part of so we’ll see how that goes.<\/p>\n
“It’s still a while away, but we’ll see how that all pans out, I suppose.”<\/p>\n
While Smith hopes to represent his country at the Olympics, he’s recently been left out of Aussie T20 sides and didn’t make the squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup.<\/p>\n
Despite that disappointment, Smith proved that he still has what it takes in the game’s shortest format with a blistering 121 from 64 balls in his first game of the BBL|14 season on Saturday for the Sydney Sixers.<\/p>\n
No one would doubt Smith’s ability to play at the top level well into his 30s, particularly if he turns his attention to T20 cricket once his Test and ODI career winds down.<\/p>\n
