TWEED Theatre Company will stage a gripping new drama, The Narcissist, from March 7.<\/p>\n

In a world of charm and manipulation, the play explores the subtle yet devastating dynamics of toxic relationships and how easily one can become ensnared.<\/p>\n

The Narcissist balances levity with an emotional intensity that keeps viewers on edge, with attractive but profoundly unsettling characters.<\/p>\n

The story’s premise spotlights Georgina, who is engaged to Ted and running her own yoga studio. When a new coffee shop opens next door, the new owner is charming, friendly and smitten. Nothing is what it seems.<\/p>\n

Playwright Lori Stewart also stars as Maddie, Georgina’s friend, and said she had always been intrigued by human behaviour.<\/p>\n

“In narcissistic relationships, the patterns involved are extremely similar from one relationship to another,” Stewart said.<\/p>\n

“I realised there is a need to spread awareness of these patterns, so I created The Narcissist to combine education with light comic relief and entertainment.”<\/p>\n

That combination is no mean feat, and Stewart was excited to use theatre as a medium to help.<\/p>\n

“I’ve observed many friends and acquaintances go through similar experiences,” she said.<\/p>\n

“The experience is ungendered, and the victim usually shoulders the blame and is worn down and often stripped of confidence and self-esteem.<\/p>\n

“Knowledge is power. Potential victims can’t avoid the red flags if they don’t know them.”<\/p>\n

The play’s writer and director are collaborators and best friends of 30 years after meeting in community theatre.<\/p>\n

A passionate actor, Leonie Richards has leaned into the director’s role and is in her third stint, the second with Stewart.<\/p>\n

“The Narcissist is more than a play \u2013 it’s a mirror reflecting our own vulnerabilities,” Richards said.<\/p>\n

“It’s thought-provoking, emotional, and darkly humorous.”<\/p>\n

Richards said the impetus for joining the production had been to work with a local writer to produce a thought-provoking modern play set in the local area.<\/p>\n

“Community theatre is a great outlet for writers, actors, directors and crew, and it’s an amazing chance to celebrate local talent and diversity and tell these stories,” she said.<\/p>\n
