{"id":105280,"date":"2025-03-02T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-03-01T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/?p=105280"},"modified":"2025-02-26T21:36:00","modified_gmt":"2025-02-26T10:36:00","slug":"bulaan-buruugaa-ngali-exhibition-at-tweed-gallery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/living\/bulaan-buruugaa-ngali-exhibition-at-tweed-gallery\/","title":{"rendered":"Bulaan Buruugaa Ngali Exhibition at Tweed Gallery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE touring Bulaan Buruugaa Ngali Exhibition has opened at Tweed Regional Gallery, signalling a historic homecoming of ancestral woven objects.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, nine objects from the Australian Museum collection will return to Country, displayed alongside 10 newly-commissioned works by contemporary Bundjalung, Yaegl, Gumbaynggirr and Kamilaroi (Gamilaroi) artists.<\/p>\n<p>Presented by Arts Northern Rivers and curated by artist Kylie Caldwell, the exhibition brings together three major regional galleries \u2013 Tweed, Lismore and Grafton \u2013 to showcase the powerful collection of woven pieces that reconnect past and present.<\/p>\n<p>Caldwell said the exhibit uniquely showcased ancient and contemporary women&#8217;s woven practices.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Each weaver&#8217;s story is interconnected in one way or another,&#8221; Caldwell said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They all have a strong appreciation and respect for renewing and continuing our ancient woven cultural practices.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/03\/art2_39193.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bundjalung Ancestral Baskets, Australian Museum Collection. Photo: AUSTRALIAN MUSEUM<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are fortunate with this exhibition to share a union of past and present that leads to tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Bundjalung bags will be home for a while, conversing, sharing, informing, inspiring, affirming and connecting to their homelands.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is an exciting homecoming, one that weaves our history into the present.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Arts and cultural leader Rhoda Roberts AO said weaving was a continuum.<\/p>\n<p>A practising weaver, festival director, curator, writer and broadcaster, Roberts&#8217;s piece Continuous Persistence is made of lomandra grass harvested on Country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Weaving is more than art; it&#8217;s an essence of the circular rhythm, something continuous, crafted from the provisions of Country,&#8221; Roberts said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/03\/art1_39187.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Krystal Randall, &#8216;Dyinda on Country&#8217;, 2024, emu feathers, raffia, paper cortege.
