{"id":106400,"date":"2025-04-19T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-18T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/?p=106400"},"modified":"2025-04-16T20:07:52","modified_gmt":"2025-04-16T10:07:52","slug":"turning-cyclone-green-waste-into-energy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/news\/turning-cyclone-green-waste-into-energy\/","title":{"rendered":"Turning cyclone green waste into energy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>IN A new partnership with Cape Byron Power, thousands of tonnes of Tweed green waste from Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred will be turned into renewable energy.<\/p>\n<p>Council&#8217;s acting director of sustainable communities and environment Jane Lofthouse said the initiative was helping to manage the significant amount of green waste generated from the severe weather event.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While Stotts Creek Resource Recovery Centre processes green waste and garden organics, the sheer volume of waste from Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred exceeds the facility&#8217;s capacity,&#8221; Lofthouse said,<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Since Monday, 17 March, the community clean-up has collected around 4,000 tonnes of green waste, equivalent to the weight of around 2,000 cars. This has demonstrated the need for an alternative solution.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/04\/waste1_39132.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Disposing of chipped green waste at the Condong Cogeneration Plant. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The green waste collected and chipped by Tweed Shire council crews is also being transported to the Condong Cogeneration Plant, operated by Cape Byron Power.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside the sugar mill, the plant works to generate electricity from biomass \u2013 an organic, sustainable energy source.<\/p>\n<p>Cape Byron Power general manager Anthony Lount said the company was proud to be an innovator in generating clean, renewable energy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are pleased to be working with council to provide a solution to a problem created by Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred,&#8221; Lount said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our employees and contractors were all impacted by this event so being able to help with the clean-up and restoring the beautiful Tweed back to its pre-cyclone condition is important to all of us,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>IN A new partnership with Cape Byron Power, thousands of tonnes of Tweed green waste from Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred will be turned into renewable energy.
