{"id":107386,"date":"2025-05-30T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-29T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/?p=107386"},"modified":"2025-05-28T20:05:16","modified_gmt":"2025-05-28T10:05:16","slug":"axes-clash-in-lismore-viking-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/news\/axes-clash-in-lismore-viking-festival\/","title":{"rendered":"Axes clash in Lismore Viking festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AXES will fly, shields will splinter and warriors will roar as more than 200 Vikings descend on Lismore showgrounds next month.<\/p>\n<p>The Viking Village Solstice, one of the biggest events of its kind in the country, returns on June 21 and 22 with two days of battle reenactments, archery, crafts and feasting.<\/p>\n<p>Hosted by local medieval club Rognvald\u2019s Lith, the festival recreates life in Scandinavia between 900 and 1100AD, with full armour, helmets and an arena built for combat.<\/p>\n<p>Rognvald\u2019s Lith president Jim Hammond formed the Lismore group in 2003 and launched the biennial event a decade later.<\/p>\n<p>They get together fortnightly to train and teach people how to use weapons while dressed in full historical kit.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/05\/25.05.2025Vikingsinl_04174.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"839\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ross Smithard, Richard Guy, Drew Mountford, Robert South, Liam Oke and Jim Hammond will be part of the Viking Village Solstice. Photo: EVANNA KELLY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was part of a Viking club at Katoomba and I started one at Lismore after we moved here in 2003,\u201d Mr Hammond said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are fanatical about it, you make the costumes and the weapons, it\u2019s like our own version of Fight Club once you get hooked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe try to make everything as historically accurate as possible, too. Photo: EVANNA KELLY<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey were in the service of the emperor for quite a few years before making their way home with their wealth and fortune,\u201d Mr Hammond said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs reenactors we can pick holes in the TV shows, it\u2019s mainly the costumes and helmets they get wrong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe love to be able to teach people more about what we&#8217;ve learnt and showcase everything we can possibly put on show.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The event runs from 10am on both days.
