{"id":108824,"date":"2025-07-29T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-07-28T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/?p=108824"},"modified":"2025-07-23T21:02:12","modified_gmt":"2025-07-23T11:02:12","slug":"hundreds-of-pickleball-players-set-for-regional-rally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/sport\/hundreds-of-pickleball-players-set-for-regional-rally\/","title":{"rendered":"Hundreds of pickleball players set for regional rally"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BALLINA is set to host one of the largest pickleball events in the region with the Northern Rivers Regional Rally expected to attract about 250 competitors to the three-day tournament.<\/p>\n<p>It will be held at the Ballina Indoor Sports Centre between August 1-3.<\/p>\n<p>The tournament is organised by the Northern Rivers Pickleball Club with players aged from 20 to over-75s competing.<\/p>\n<p>Pickleball is one of the fast-growing sports in the region with registrations filling up in the first hour of entries being opened.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This tournament highlights the incredible momentum behind pickleball growth worldwide, including in regional Australia,&#8221; Northern Rivers Pickleball Club president Steve Bergan said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not just about competition, it&#8217;s about connection, inclusion, and having a great time together.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Pickleball is a low-impact sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis.<\/p>\n<p>It focuses on reflexes, reactions and positioning of the ball rather than power and speed.<\/p>\n<p>The Ballina-based Northern Rivers Pickleball Club is the biggest in the region and continuing to grow at a rapid rate.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_114429\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-114429\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-114429\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/07\/494774489_1222319036_08590.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-114429\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Northern Rivers Pickleball Club will host its major event with a three-day tournament at Ballina.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It has more than 300 members with many now playing in state tournaments across NSW and south-east Queensland.<\/p>\n<p>Bergan is one of several members at the club who only picked up a racket for the first time three years ago.<\/p>\n<p>One year later, he won a gold medal in the over-60s men&#8217;s doubles at the Pickleball Australia Seniors Tournament on the Gold Coast.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I played a bit of tennis, squash, and table tennis previously, and this game combines the best aspects of each into one,&#8221; Bergan said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The growth has been rapid, and the average age of our members is starting to come down, too.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I need to thank McGrath Northern Rivers, whose support helps bring this national-level experience to the local stage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Spectators are welcome to attend with singles, doubles and mixed doubles events being held.<\/p>\n<p>The tournament will be live streamed with commentary on YouTube.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BALLINA is set to host one of the largest pickleball events in the region with the Northern Rivers Regional Rally expected to attract about 250 competitors to the three-day tournament.
