{"id":109106,"date":"2025-08-10T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-08-09T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/?p=109106"},"modified":"2025-08-06T17:51:45","modified_gmt":"2025-08-06T07:51:45","slug":"rotary-club-partners-with-school-in-peace-pole-initiative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/news\/rotary-club-partners-with-school-in-peace-pole-initiative\/","title":{"rendered":"Rotary club partners with school in peace pole initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A PEACE pole that originated in Japan 70 years ago has been installed at Ballina Coast High School as a symbol of unity and hope for the future.<\/p>\n<p>Ballina-on-Richmond and the Satellite Club of Ballina Lifestyle Rotary unveiled the project at an official ceremony in the school garden.<\/p>\n<p>The school has a close association with the Rotary club through the Interact program, in which students volunteer and raise money for people in need.<\/p>\n<p>Students recently raised money to buy clothes for homeless people through the St Vincent de Paul Society.<\/p>\n<p>The poles are part of a worldwide initiative, started in Japan by Masahisa Goi in the aftermath of World War II in 1955.<\/p>\n<p>More than 250,000 peace poles have been installed worldwide, each inscribed with the message &#8216;May Peace Prevail on Earth&#8217; in multiple languages.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_114894\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-114894\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-114894\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/08\/IMG_1266_11733.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-114894\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ballina Coast High School has partnered with Rotary to install the first peace pole in the region. Photo: MITCHELL CRAIG<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a message that we all need to hear as a society and it all starts with the youth,&#8221; Rotary Club of Ballina-on-Richmond president Rob Chilman said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This has been in the works for the last year and it&#8217;s great that the school has come to the party.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hopefully it will be a symbol for decency and treating one another with respect throughout the whole community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Rotary district governor Lisa Hunt and Ballina mayor Sharon Cadwallader spoke at the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am so proud that we are in partnership with the rotary clubs on this one,&#8221; Ballina Coast High School principal Peter Howes said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s our young people that are going to make the difference with peace in the world.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re redeveloping the garden around the peace pole and it&#8217;s going to look fantastic when its finished.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A second peace pole will be unveiled at Ballina RSL Club in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A PEACE pole that originated in Japan 70 years ago has been installed at Ballina Coast High School as a symbol of unity and hope for the future.
