{"id":110322,"date":"2025-09-29T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-28T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/?p=110322"},"modified":"2025-09-24T19:25:56","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T09:25:56","slug":"construction-underway-as-ses-unit-prepares-for-new-control-centre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/news\/construction-underway-as-ses-unit-prepares-for-new-control-centre\/","title":{"rendered":"Construction underway as SES unit prepares for new control centre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CONSTRUCTION has started on a $6.3 million SES unit and Emergency Operations Centre in Ballina, designed to improve the region&#8217;s flood and disaster response.<\/p>\n<p>The new facility will include a six-bay vehicle shed, incident control area and training rooms.<\/p>\n<p>Ballina Shire Council has contributed $4.2 million to the project, with additional funding from the state government.<\/p>\n<p>Ballina mayor Sharon Cadwallader said the project was a direct response to the community&#8217;s experience in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;THE devastating impact of the 2022 floods and the threat posed by Cyclone Alfred have shown just how important it is to be prepared,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In partnership with the NSW SES, we&#8217;re delivering infrastructure our local volunteers need to respond faster, coordinate better, and protect lives and properties when disaster strikes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2025\/09\/BallinaSES-Visualisa_86895.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A six-bay vehicle shed will be part of the new SES centre. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The project will also provide new car parking and lighting, as well as connecting footpaths and stormwater infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>To allow for construction, 40 trees were removed from the site.<\/p>\n<p>In their place, 80 new trees, 150 shrubs and 350 ground covers will be planted, using species<\/p>\n<p>that support the local coastal swamp forest.<\/p>\n<p>Ballina will also receive a $270,000 flood rescue vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>The vehicles can carry a small rescue boat and crew and are designed for use in remote and rugged areas.<\/p>\n<p>The current SES headquarters will remain operational during construction.<\/p>\n<p>Work on the new facilities is expected to finish late next year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CONSTRUCTION has started on a $6.3 million SES unit and Emergency Operations Centre in Ballina, designed to improve the region&#8217;s flood and disaster response.
