RICHMOND Police District is warning businesses and the public to be on alert after counterfeit notes were found circulating in the Northern Rivers.<\/p>\n

Officers were alerted after fake $50 and $100 notes were handed to businesses in Ballina.<\/p>\n

The notes were seized and inquiries are underway.<\/p>\n

The Byron Bay Chamber of Commerce said some of its members had also been caught out.<\/p>\n

Police said the notes are often low-quality prints and are typically presented during busy periods to avoid inspection.<\/p>\n

In some cases, offenders ask for a counterfeit note to be exchanged for smaller denominations.<\/p>\n

Tips to spot fake notes include checking the polymer plastic returns to shape after being scrunched, feeling for raised printing, and holding the note to the light to see the Australian Coat of Arms.<\/p>\n

Genuine $50 notes feature the Southern Cross in the clear window, while $100 notes show a lyrebird.<\/p>\n
