With writing, I stare at a blank screen and two hours later there’s a thousand words there, and I go, ‘Where the hell did that come from?'”

“It’s very collaborative doing films. Someone else has developed the story.

“Here though you’re on your own and everything that goes down there is yours. Photo: SUPPLIED

That freedom has turned Brown into one of Australia’s most recognisable new crime writers.

His debut collection Sweet Jimmy led to The Drowning in 2023, and now The Hidden, a taut coastal thriller set in a town called The Heads, a place that could be any number of villages along the New South Wales coast.

The novel follows Sergeant William Jarrett as he investigates a drug overdose, a shipment of cocaine and a series of strange events that unsettle the quiet community. Beneath the surface, Brown explores guilt, loyalty and the choices that can define a life.

“I know that setting very well,” he says. “I’ve got a farm up the north coast and I surf at some of the beaches between Kempsey and Coffs. I have coffee there with other guys that surf. You get to know people and everybody’s got a story. Everyone thinks they know everything about everyone in small towns, but there’s a hell of a lot we don’t know.”

He pauses, then adds: “The beauty of the beach is a great opposite to the darkness of crime. I thoroughly enjoy putting the two together.”

That mix of sunshine and shadows, salt and secrets, has earned his work the nickname surf noir, a term coined by fellow author Trent Dalton.

For The Hidden, the spark came from close to home.

Actor and author Bryan Brown on the set of Palm Beach. Photo: SUPPLIED

“The bloke that comes and does solar at my house made me think about something,” he says. “That got me started on a new story. Then I developed new characters and let them take me somewhere, see where we end up.”

Brown’s worlds are full of ordinary people making imperfect decisions.

“I’m interested in how easy it is to make a bad choice and it’s very hard to come back from,” he says.

He traces that fascination back to his childhood in Sydney’s western suburbs.

“When I grew up, we all mucked around like hell,” he says. “A couple of blokes I knew got into trouble. They might nick a Mars Bar from the local grocer, then someone says, ‘What about we knock off a lawnmower?’ That little step can put you on a road. I’m interested in how that happens.”

Writing those moments, he says, feels instinctive.

“I write with one finger on the computer,” he laughs. “So instead of running or going back, I’ve got time to feel like this is how I want it to be. I don’t change much. The telling of the story always feels right as I’m putting it down.”

While his characters wrestle with guilt, redemption and choice, Brown keeps his focus on people and place, particularly the coast.

“My daughter lives up near Brunswick, so I was up there the other day,” he says. “Anywhere there’s a beach, I love being at. I love the feel and the casualness of the coast. Watching surfers, toddlers running around, there’s something magic about it.”

Bryan Brown and Sam Neill in Old School. Like his earlier work, the novel captures the tension between the coast’s easy charm and the darkness that lingers beneath it, a landscape as beautiful as it is unforgiving.

He’ll be back on familiar territory soon, appearing at the Byron Writers Festival’s evening event with Nell Schofield at Bangalow’s A&I Hall.

After decades of embodying other people’s stories, Brown now finds joy in creating his own.

“Storytelling, telling a story has always been pretty well my life,” he says. “This is just another platform to keep doing it, and it’s bloody enjoyable.”

Bryan Brown will appear in conversation with Nell Schofield at the A&I Hall on Station Street, Bangalow, on Thursday, November 6 at 6.30pm, with books available for purchase through The Book Room.
