BALLINA Seagulls rugby league and the Rotary on Richmond Club are teaming up to bring Australian sports legends Merv Hughes and Paul Sironen to a fundraiser lunch.<\/p>\n

The pair will be guest speakers at Cherry Street Sports Club on Friday, November 24.<\/p>\n

Funds raised from the lunch will support the Seagulls rugby league and rotary clubs with its events and programs for the upcoming year.<\/p>\n

It will be a timely visit for Hughes with the first cricket test match in the Ashes Series between Australia and England being played during that period.<\/p>\n

Hughes represented Australia in 53 test matches between 1985 and 1994, taking 212 wickets.<\/p>\n

He was part of three national teams that won Ashes Series, including two in England.<\/p>\n

In 1993, he took 31 wickets in the series and was one of the most iconic cricketers during the era.<\/p>\n

Former Australian and NSW front-rower Paul Sironen will help raise funds for the Ballina Seagulls and Richmond Rotary Club.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

“The speakers will provide insights, and stories that celebrate resilience and mateship,” an event spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

“The event will also include exciting interactive experiences to keep the energy high and the atmosphere fun.”<\/p>\n

Sironen moved to the region a few years ago and works in a community role with the NSW Rugby League.<\/p>\n

He is the most capped player for the Balmain Tigers, playing 246 games as well as representing Australia and NSW in the State of Origin series.<\/p>\n

He served as a board member, general manager and pathways manager at the Balmain club after he retired.<\/p>\n

Sironen has also been part of fundraisers and presentations with Northern Rivers Titans junior representative teams in recent years.<\/p>\n
