	{"id":112256,"date":"2025-12-23T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-22T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/?p=112256"},"modified":"2025-12-17T20:28:42","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T09:28:42","slug":"staying-waterwise-in-tweed-over-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/news\/staying-waterwise-in-tweed-over-summer\/","title":{"rendered":"Staying waterwise in Tweed over summer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MANAGING summertime water use can be a challenge and Tweed Shire Council is reminding the community to be water-savvy in the heat.<\/p>\n<p>The Waterwise Target 160 campaign encourages the goal of using no more than 160 litres of water per person per day by making small household changes.<\/p>\n<p>Tweed Shire Council\u2019s water cycle coordinator, Elizabeth Seidl, said residents should remember that water didn&#8217;t just fall from the sky and flow straight into the taps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven when it\u2019s raining outside, our drinking water supply is limited,\u201d Seidl said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe council collects it, treats it, and delivers it through the supply network and that costs money, resources and energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seidl said that small water-wise steps, such as shower lengths, were important, particularly in households with young children and teenagers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can use water-efficient showers and tapware all year round, but being mindful not to use excessive water is a good start,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso approaching Christmas, people like to do a cleanup of their property, so being mindful of how you use water there is also helpful.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_112389\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-112389\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-112389\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2025\/12\/picture_20251119_123_25947_tn.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"460\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-112389\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Using water-wise gardening techniques such as comprehensive mulching helps conserve water use in the garden. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne thing to think about is perhaps installing a small rainwater tank for garden and pool use, that way you can substitute rainwater for the treated tap water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Research by The Water Conservancy has shown that most Australians value water in nature, but don\u2019t value tap water in the same way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a disconnect between their thoughts about water,\u201d Seidl said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey think about lakes and rivers and rainfall, and 80 to 90 per cent of Australians are concerned with climate change and biodiversity and carbon emissions, but they\u2019re not actually linking the water supply and the climate together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur key message is that treated tap water is a finite resource, and we need to use it wisely, in the hotter months, even when it rains.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tweed Shire Council offers a water-saving rebate for shower heads and tapware to residents who wish to upgrade to four-star-rated fittings saving residents up to $100.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSaving water is about protecting the Tweed\u2019s environment and saving money, but also it\u2019s the lifeblood of our region, and we all need to do our part to make sure there\u2019s enough to go around,\u201d Seidl said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_112390\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-112390\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-112390\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2025\/12\/picture_20251119_123_25874_tn.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"401\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-112390\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Watering in the coolest part of the day can save hundreds of litres of water a day by using less hose time and reduced evaporation. Fix leaks: A dripping tap can waste over 30 litres a day, and a running toilet can waste up to 260 litres<\/p>\n<p>2. Upgrade fixtures: Choose showerheads, taps and appliances with a 4-star water rating or higher<\/p>\n<p>3. Cover the pool: Reducing evaporation could save up to 82 litres a day<\/p>\n<p>4. Be garden-smart: A hose can use 15\u201320 litres per minute. Water in the cooler parts of the day, and plant drought-tolerant natives<\/p>\n<p>5. Keep showers short: Every minute you shave off saves around 9 litres. Aim for 4 minutes or less<\/p>\n<p>6.
