Murder. Addiction. Religion. Lives lived on the margins.

One of their best-known songs, Banging in the Nails, remains a touchstone for that approach.

The song is jaunty and easy to sing along to, which makes its subject matter — the crucifixion — all the more confronting. Some listeners find it liberating. Others do not.

The song’s origins, Jacques says, are not religious so much as theatrical.

He points to Mel Brooks and The Producers, admiring its ability to cross lines while remaining oddly joyful, and to A Clockwork Orange, recalling a scene in which the character Alex fantasises about violence while reading the Bible.

“These are people who loved to shock and loved to disturb,” Jacques says. “That’s part of it.”

That instinct did not come from theory.

Jacques spent his early adult years living above a brothel in London’s Soho, surrounded by people whose lives rarely made it into respectable narratives.

Drug users, sex workers and petty criminals were not characters to him. They were neighbours.

By the time he began writing songs seriously in the 1980s, those lives had become his reference point.

“I’m telling stories,” he says. “They’re very dark stories. Some of them are really unpleasant.”

The violence, he adds, is not imagined.

“These are true stories. I knew these people.”

Jacques is entirely self-trained as a musician, having never studied formally.

He learned by repetition rather than instruction, playing accordion, piano and ukulele until the mechanics gave way to instinct.

His high falsetto voice, now inseparable from The Tiger Lillies’ sound, was not a stylistic decision.

“It just happened,” he says.

At some point, someone described him as the “criminal castrato”, a nickname Jacques found accurate enough to keep.

Audience reactions have shifted over time, though not always in the ways he expected.

In places like Mexico or Chile, where English is often a second language, the lyrics land at a slight distance.

“They just think I’m crazy,” he says. “And they love it.”

These days, he is less certain that offence is the right frame. Australian Audiences, he says, seem more inclined to listen than recoil.

“I don’t think I really offend people anymore,” he says. “I used to offend people. But I don’t think I’m doing that now.”

The darkness remains, but it functions differently.

“It’s disturbing,” he says. “But not offensively disturbing. Just disturbingly disturbing.”

That distinction underpins Serenade from the Sewer, the band’s current album and live show, which presents a series of short, self-contained songs Jacques describes as theatrical journeys.

The material draws directly on his memories of Soho in the 1980s and the people who passed through it.

“This is my life,” he says. “This is where I started.”

The Tiger Lillies will bring Serenade from the Sewer to the Brunswick Picture House on February 26, performing in a venue whose scale suits the precision of the work.

The return adds another chapter to a long and occasionally uneasy relationship with Australian audiences.

The band has never fitted neatly into a single category, and Jacques has long stopped trying to explain where it belongs.

“Nobody sounds like us,” he says.

Awards and recognition matter less to him now than momentum. The work continues to change, and he continues to follow it.

The Tiger Lillies perform Serenade from the Sewer at the Brunswick Picture House in Brunswick Heads on February 26, with tickets available via tigerlillies.com/tour

WHEN Martyn Jacques sings about banging in the nails, some people laugh, some shift in their seats, and a few look genuinely alarmed.
