{"id":113282,"date":"2026-02-12T13:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-12T02:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/?p=113282"},"modified":"2026-02-11T17:18:18","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T06:18:18","slug":"introducing-the-murbah-mooners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/news\/introducing-the-murbah-mooners\/","title":{"rendered":"Introducing the &#8216;Murbah Mooners&#8217;:"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ON full moon nights, a group of cyclists known as the &#8216;Murbah Mooners&#8217; gathers at the old Murwillumbah station to ride the rail trail together after dark.<\/p>\n<p>With numbers averaging around 30 riders a night, the all-ages, all-skills-welcome group was established in 2023 by Murwillumbah local Geoff Newham, initially as a way to improve safety for night riders.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Riding at night is a bit risky on your own, because if something happens to you, nobody is around to help,&#8221; Newham said.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, the rides have evolved into a social activity, attracting participants from as far as the Gold Coast, Maclean and Goondiwindi.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think people like to be part of something and the beauty of this is that there&#8217;s no membership fee,&#8221; Newham said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_122119\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-122119\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-122119\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/02\/oldburringbartunnela_83091_tn.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"316\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-122119\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The old Burringbar Tunnel, a haven for budding graffiti artists and glow worms. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The rides follow the Murwillumbah Rail Trail, which was built in the aftermath of the 2022 floods.<\/p>\n<p>Newham, who was himself flood affected, said riding the trail had been a positive influence on his mental health.<\/p>\n<p>One of the highlights of the route is the old Burringbar tunnel, which stretches for 500 metres and becomes home to glow worms after dark.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Riding through the tunnel at night, all the glow worms come out, and it&#8217;s like travelling through this bright blue sea of stars,&#8221; Newham said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s an incredibly uplifting experience.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_122120\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-122120\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-122120\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/02\/glowormsintunnel_83467_tn.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"655\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-122120\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Glow worms in the Burringbar Tunnel. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The &#8216;Mooners&#8217; typically depart from Murwillumbah station in the evening and often finish the ride with a meal at either the Mooball Victory Hotel or the Burringbar Hotel.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We really inject business into these little venues, because depending on the moon, we might be turning up on a quiet Tuesday night with 30 customers,&#8221; Newham said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Newham, moonlight cycling is growing in popularity, with rail trails across the country forming their own groups.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s definitely growing, and I personally want to start a group in Lismore for their rail trail and call it the &#8216;Lismore Lunatics&#8217; or something,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ON full moon nights, a group of cyclists known as the &#8216;Murbah Mooners&#8217; gathers at the old Murwillumbah station to ride the rail trail together after dark.
