A SHARK Tank-style pitch event will give local women the chance to launch new business ideas as Ballina marks International Women’s Day next month.<\/p>\n

Ballina Chamber of Commerce will host the event at Ballina RSL Club on Friday, March 6, featuring a “Prawn Tank” pitch competition for female entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n

Local women will be invited to pitch their ideas to a panel including the mayor and other community leaders, with three finalists selected to present to the audience.<\/p>\n

One finalist will receive a support package valued at about $5000 to help develop their idea.<\/p>\n

Life coach and keynote speaker Sophia Partland will be the guest speaker at the event.<\/p>\n

Ballina RSL Club executive manager of marketing and community engagement Claire Tyson said the Prawn Tank was designed to be accessible and supportive.<\/p>\n

“The most exciting part is the Prawn Tank, our take on Shark Tank, but more friendly,” Tyson said.<\/p>\n

“We’re looking for anything that supports our town or women, particularly female-forward business ideas.<\/p>\n

“You don’t have to be a business owner, it’s really about connecting, celebrating and having fun.”<\/p>\n

Partland, a member of the Murwillumbah business chamber, said she would focus on helping participants build confidence and communicate their ideas clearly.<\/p>\n

“Public speaking is something a lot of people struggle with. It’s about helping them connect with their authenticity so their message comes through,” she said.<\/p>\n

“Anybody courageous enough to start a business is someone I’m very interested in helping along the way.”<\/p>\n

The event will also raise funds for Women Up North and Love Bites, which provide education and support services for women and young people affected by domestic and family violence.<\/p>\n
