	{"id":113482,"date":"2026-02-20T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-02-19T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/?p=113482"},"modified":"2026-02-18T20:37:48","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T09:37:48","slug":"new-teakwood-owner-preserves-cafes-village-charm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/news\/new-teakwood-owner-preserves-cafes-village-charm\/","title":{"rendered":"New Teakwood owner preserves cafe&#8217;s village charm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TEAKWOOD Cafe in Burringbar will reopen next week under new ownership, with the new operator pledging to keep the venue much the same for the local community that has long treated it as its own.<\/p>\n<p>The cafe was sold earlier this year, prompting concern among locals after it briefly closed during the handover.<\/p>\n<p>New owner Trent Ivett said delays in finalising transfer documents forced Teakwood to shut its doors for a fortnight, despite plans for a seamless overnight changeover.<\/p>\n<p>Ivett said his approach was guided by the cafe&#8217;s place in the community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is their cafe space, and my mantra is &#8216;if it ain&#8217;t broke, then don&#8217;t fix it&#8217;,&#8221; Ivett said.<\/p>\n<p>Located along Burringbar Way near the Tweed Rail Trail, Teakwood is a popular stop for locals and visitors passing through the village.<\/p>\n<p>The cafe sits beside Burringbar Gallery, with the two businesses sharing a long-standing relationship.<\/p>\n<p>The gallery provided the cafe with its carved Javanese teak doorway, while Teakwood has long served customers browsing the gallery&#8217;s antique collection.<\/p>\n<p>Ivett said reopening had come with challenges, including cooking in the kitchen himself while waiting for his new chef to start.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_122463\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-122463\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-122463\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/02\/8Q2A3461_81861.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-122463\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ivett has promised to retain the cafe&#8217;s much-loved menu. Photo: DAVID COPE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have been a makeshift chef for the last eight days, but with the massive help of my staff we satisfied our customers with some select meals,&#8221; Ivett said.<\/p>\n<p>Full service will resume next week when new chef Leo Cardillo Fernandes begins.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is an honour to be part of Teakwood&#8217;s next chapter,&#8221; Cardillo Fernandes said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m excited to step into such a well-loved cafe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The existing menu will remain, including long-time favourites such as the Spanish omelette, potato rosti and chicken burger.<\/p>\n<p>Ivett said he hoped to continue the family-style atmosphere created by the cafe&#8217;s former owners, who ran the kitchen alongside their daughters.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If it wasn&#8217;t for them, I don&#8217;t think I would have survived the first week to be honest,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Ivett said he was conscious of preserving the work of the previous owners.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I didn&#8217;t want to do them any injustices by changing it,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Original owner Emmy Holland described the handover as bittersweet.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was a longtime dream of ours to run this cafe and our customers have become like family to us, but it is time to hand over the Teakwood legacy to Trent,&#8221; Holland said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TEAKWOOD Cafe in Burringbar will reopen next week under new ownership, with the new operator pledging to keep the venue much the same for the local community that has long treated it as its own.
