FOOTBALL Far North Coast is approaching record participation numbers, with more than 5,500 players already registered ahead of the 2026 season.<\/p>\n
Current figures show 86 men’s teams and 44 women’s teams will enter competitions across the region’s 25 clubs.<\/p>\n
Participation is expected to rise beyond 7,000 this year as female football continues to grow, with more than 2,500 women now playing.<\/p>\n
Wet weather washouts and referee shortages created significant challenges last season, particularly during the first half of the competition.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of junior players were affected as repeated rain disruptions forced fixture changes and cancellations.<\/p>\n
Football Far North Coast general manager Steve Mackney said he was optimistic about the year ahead.<\/p>\n
“Season 2026 is poised to see football retain its position as the most popular team\u00a0participation sport in the region,” Mackney said.<\/p>\n
“I extend a sincere thanks to all volunteers, match officials and to every person who contributes to community football.”<\/p>\n
Rising participation has also prompted renewed calls to recruit more match officials, with a focus on attracting adult referees.<\/p>\n
Mackney said increasing referee numbers would help avoid situations where teams or clubs are required to provide their own officials on game day.<\/p>\n
“It is very apparent, that we are again going to be desperately short of having enough referees,” he said.<\/p>\n
“We urge all clubs, participants and every parent, to recognise that football activity will be enhanced if we have more accredited match officials.<\/p>\n
“Specifically, match officials who are reasonably available across the broad geographical location of our 25 clubs.”<\/p>\n
Preseason competitions have begun ahead of the season proper, which starts in April.<\/p>\n
Referee training courses are also being offered as the association prepares for the expanded competition year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
