	{"id":114315,"date":"2026-03-29T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-28T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/?p=114315"},"modified":"2026-03-25T22:59:04","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T11:59:04","slug":"pulp-fiction-turns-another-page","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/news\/pulp-fiction-turns-another-page\/","title":{"rendered":"Pulp Fiction turns another page"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WHEN Angela Pereira first stepped inside the building that would become Murwillumbah\u2019s beloved second-hand bookstore Pulp Fiction, she found holes in the walls, debris on the floor and a chained front door that barely worked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was this sort of front door with a chain wrapped around it,\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt looked like Fort Knox, but you only had to push it, and it would swing open.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inside, the remnants of past occupants were unusual to say the least.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt looked like someone had kept an indoor fire in there,\u201d Angela said.<\/p>\n<p>Despite its rough beginnings, she saw potential, transforming the derelict space into what would become one of Murwillumbah\u2019s most iconic local stores.<\/p>\n<p>Angela first entertained the idea of opening a bookstore while living abroad, inspired in part by the Quentin Tarantino film that would later give the shop its name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was living in Berlin, and I was imagining what I would do if I came back to Australia,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_123883\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-123883\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-123883\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/03\/angelapulp_02670-rotated.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-123883\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Owner Angela Pereira said that the labyrinthine structure of the bookshelves is an &#8220;ordered chaos&#8221; that enhances the joy of discovery for customers. Photo: Supplied.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d just seen that movie, and I just decided to follow my passions and open up a bookstore, because I really liked reading.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the film inspired the name, \u2018pulp\u2019 would later take on a literal meaning after consecutive floods in 2017 and 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the floods came through it looked like a poltergeist had been through the shop,\u201d Angela recalled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBooks and water don\u2019t mix, and we lost everything at belly-button height.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Swollen books buckled the shelves, mud coated everything, and crowbars were used to retrieve what little could be salvaged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was just such a nightmare,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019d think it would never be clean again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But with determination and strong community support, Pulp Fiction lived on.<\/p>\n<p>Angela raised the building above flood level, while locals helped clear debris and donate stock so the shop could reopen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople turned up in droves to help clear debris and donate books so we could restock,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_123884\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-123884\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-123884\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/03\/pulp2_03032-rotated.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-123884\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Owner Angela Pereira on the front porch of her iconic second-hand bookstore.
