{"id":114544,"date":"2026-04-10T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/?p=114544"},"modified":"2026-04-08T19:38:38","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T09:38:38","slug":"from-market-stall-to-mediterranean-pantry-tierra-opens-first-tweed-store","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/news\/from-market-stall-to-mediterranean-pantry-tierra-opens-first-tweed-store\/","title":{"rendered":"From market stall to Mediterranean pantry, Tierra opens first Tweed store"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE opening of Tierra Bulk Foods in Tweed Heads marks the first permanent retail space for founders Juan Lozano and Elena Pastor, whose once-humble market stall has grown into a thriving Northern Rivers business.<\/p>\n<p>The new Tweed store carries over the feel of their market presence, filled with Mediterranean-inspired products that regulars will recognise from stalls across the region.<\/p>\n<p>Designed with the help of a Melbourne-based sustainable design studio, the shop reflects a return to the couple&#8217;s original vision for the business.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As part of the design process, we did quite a lot of deep internal work to reconnect with Tierra&#8217;s values \u2014 the essence of why Tierra exists and what we are trying to share through it,&#8221; Elena said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_124322\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-124322\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-124322\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/04\/8Q2A3931_49453.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-124322\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Above: Tierra Bulk Foods founders Juan Lozano and Elena Pastor outside their new Tweed Heads store.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We felt that this message hadn&#8217;t always been fully transmitted before, so designing the new shop became an opportunity to return to our origins.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mediterranean influences run throughout the space, with sustainable materials and a layout designed to feel welcoming without losing a sense of modern simplicity.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We wanted to design it with the same care and consistency we apply when sourcing every single product for Tierra,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We want stepping inside to feel like a trip to Morocco, Greece, Spain or the Middle East.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>For Juan and Elena, the shop is a natural extension of the market atmosphere that first defined their business.<\/p>\n<p>Tierra began in late 2019, when the pair set up a small stall selling Mediterranean-inspired wholefoods.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_124323\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-124323\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-124323\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/04\/8Q2A3911_45142.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"438\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-124323\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The new store is a warm and homely space &#8211; filled with the colourful array of Mediterranean-inspired products that have become a familiar sight at market stalls across the Northern Rivers. Photo: DAVID COPE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Within months, the fledgling venture was tested by bushfires, the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2022 floods.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Looking back, it certainly wasn&#8217;t an easy start,&#8221; Juan said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But seeing the reaction from the community around us made us realise we were on the right path.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In six and a half years, Tierra has grown from a village market stall into a business employing nearly 20 staff, stocking more than 700 products and trading at an average of eight markets each week.<\/p>\n<p>Juan attributes that growth to a strong ethos and long-term commitment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our culture is built on respect and love for the products, our teammates, our customers and our neighbours,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_124324\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-124324\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-124324\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/04\/8Q2A3914_45762.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-124324\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Designed with the help of a Melbourne-based sustainable design studio, the shop reflects a return to the couple\u2019s original vision for the business. Photo: DAVID COPE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The lively spirit of their stalls reflects the couple&#8217;s Spanish heritage and their memories of traditional Mediterranean marketplaces, where food is as much about connection as it is about produce.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Markets in Spain are vibrant and full of life, and we try to bring that same energy to our stalls,&#8221; Elena said.<\/p>\n<p>That atmosphere carries through music, colourful displays and the aromas of spices and wholefoods.<\/p>\n<p>Freshness, seasonality and strong relationships with local growers remain central to the philosophy behind Tierra \u2014 a name that translates from Spanish as &#8220;earth&#8221; or &#8220;soil&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Travel also plays a role in shaping the product range.<\/p>\n<p>Juan and Elena regularly visit suppliers around the world, from olive growers in Greece&#8217;s Kalamata region to spice merchants in North Africa and cashew producers on the border of Vietnam and Cambodia.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_124325\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-124325\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-124325\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/04\/8Q2A3917_46510.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-124325\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tierra&#8217;s wide range of products is the result of the couple&#8217;s extensive travel experience, which includes visiting olive growers in Greece\u2019s Kalamata region, spice merchants in North Africa and cashew producers on the border of Vietnam and Cambodia.
