{"id":114563,"date":"2026-04-11T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-10T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/?p=114563"},"modified":"2026-04-08T21:14:53","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T11:14:53","slug":"murwillumbah-farmers-market-marks-15-years-of-growth-community-and-sustainability","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/news\/murwillumbah-farmers-market-marks-15-years-of-growth-community-and-sustainability\/","title":{"rendered":"Murwillumbah Farmers&#8217; Market marks 15 years of growth, community and sustainability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Murwillumbah Farmers&#8217; Market will celebrate its 15th anniversary later this month, marking a milestone for a community institution that has grown from humble beginnings into a weekly hub for local producers and residents.<\/p>\n<p>What began as a small, uncertain initiative has evolved into a cornerstone of the region&#8217;s food culture, while staying true to its founding purpose.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When the market first started in 2011, it had only 11 stalls and the future looked uncertain,&#8221; market manager Kaisa Kilponen said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, over the last 15 years it has grown to include nearly 50 dedicated local farmers and producers who come along every week.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite that growth, Kilponen said the ethos behind the market has remained unchanged.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our farmers and producers pride themselves on their produce,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_124367\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-124367\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-124367\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/04\/20260218_092232_60459.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-124367\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Local huddled in a show of community support on market day. Photo: Supplied.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;From its creation, the market&#8217;s vision has been simple, to ensure that the local community has access to fresh, seasonal produce on a weekly basis.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The market will continue to live and breathe these values so future generations can also experience that joy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Held at the Murwillumbah Showground with views of Wollumbin, the market has become a regular midweek meeting point for locals and visitors.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For many members of our community, the markets have become a way of life and we&#8217;re grateful to offer a space for locals to connect with their farmers, producers, food vendors and with each other,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Sustainability has also been a focus, with the market winning the community category at Tweed Shire Council&#8217;s 2023 Tweed Sustainability Awards.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_124368\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-124368\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-124368\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/04\/20260304_080423_59531.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-124368\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Locally farmed peppers, chillies, garlic and ginger on offer at the market. Photo: Supplied.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As far as we know, we&#8217;re Tweed Shire&#8217;s only market with a washing station,&#8221; Kilponen said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This has meant that we have been able to significantly reduce the amount of waste by washing the cups, plates and cutlery used every week.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The market also received the Reader&#8217;s Choice Award for Outstanding Farmers Market at the 2023 delicious. Harvey Norman Produce Awards.<\/p>\n<p>Several original stallholders are still trading, including Everest Farm, Jumping Red Ant, Silva Lining Organics, Caldera Honey and Costanzo Apples.<\/p>\n<p>Looking ahead, the anniversary celebrations will include a kids&#8217; program, birthday treats and live music at the April 15 market.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re thrilled to announce that local world music artist Murray Kyle will be playing at our birthday market, alongside local singer-songwriter Josh Lovegrove,&#8221; Kilponen said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_124369\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-124369\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-124369\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/04\/20260218_073345_61226.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-124369\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The market, which is located in the Murwillumbah Showgrounds provides visitors with a tranquil shopping experience.
