{"id":114772,"date":"2026-04-22T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/?p=114772"},"modified":"2026-04-15T23:17:54","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T13:17:54","slug":"key-hinterland-road-repaired-after-2022-floods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/news\/key-hinterland-road-repaired-after-2022-floods\/","title":{"rendered":"Key hinterland road repaired after 2022 floods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MAJOR restoration works on Wilsons Creek Road have been completed, addressing severe damage caused by the catastrophic 2022 floods.<\/p>\n<p>The multi-year project has restored a critical evacuation route for the hinterland communities of Wilsons Creek, Upper Wilsons Creek and Huonbrook.<\/p>\n<p>The $10.7 million upgrade included repairs to major landslips, widening of road shoulders, and the replacement or repair of 55 culvert crossings.<\/p>\n<p>To improve resilience against future extreme weather events, crews undertook pavement stabilisation and resurfacing to strengthen the road.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/04\/WilsonsCreekRoadsoil_64909.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The road during the construction process. Photo: Byron Shire Council<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The 2022 floods caused widespread devastation, with some residents cut off for weeks. During that time, communities relied on improvised pulley systems and carried out makeshift road repairs by hand before official assistance could reach them.<\/p>\n<p>Work on the key stretch between Upper Wilsons Creek and Alidenes Road began in mid-2025.<\/p>\n<p>The project was jointly funded by the Albanese and Minns governments under the Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to improving flood resilience, the upgrades are expected to reduce the cost of future repairs following natural disasters.<\/p>\n<p>NSW Minister for Roads Jenny Aitchison said Wilsons Creek Road is a vital link for people living in hinterland communities and this upgrade means safer, more reliable access to work, school and essential services.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Communities in the Northern Rivers deserve a road they can rely on in all conditions,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Byron Shire Mayor Sarah Ndiaye said Wilsons Creek Road is looking great and the local community is really happy with the flood repair work that has been delivered to date.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/04\/WilsonsCreekRoadafte_66444.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"975\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wilsons Creek Road after the floods.
