BALLINA Shire Council is stepping up efforts to reduce household waste, inviting residents to take part in a community clothing drop-off day.<\/p>\n
The event will be held at the Ballina Salvage Shed on Saturday, 2 May and offers people a chance to clear out unwanted items while supporting sustainability initiatives.<\/p>\n
The shed already diverts more than 350 tonnes of pre-owned goods from landfill each year, playing a key role in fostering a circular economy and providing affordable items to the community.<\/p>\n
In a new partnership with e\u2013THREAD, the council will collect gently used women\u2019s, men\u2019s and children\u2019s clothing, as well as accessories and household textiles.<\/p>\n
Resource recovery education officer and project lead Justine Rowe said the initiative builds on strong local interest in sustainable fashion.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Ballina community has been highly engaged in our ReWear project, which kicked off in mid-2025 with the aim of supporting a local, circular clothing community,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe held six workshops in 2025, sharing skills in textile mending, repair and upcycling.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile we always encourage mindful consumption and extending the life of the clothes you already own, this drop-off event is an easy, free way to clear out your wardrobe, avoid sending textiles to landfill, and create positive environmental and social outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n
In addition to environmental benefits, the event will support Open Parachute, a school\u2013based mental health program.<\/p>\n
Proceeds from donated textiles will help deliver tools to young people to manage anxiety, build resilience and navigate social challenges.<\/p>\n
\u201cAll you need to do is gather the clothing and textiles you no longer need, drive through the Salvage Shed car park, and the e\u2013THREAD team will take care of the rest, \u201cRowe said.<\/p>\n
