THE Northern Rivers is set to host a new international sporting event, with the World Bowls Series Northern Rivers Open bringing top-level competition to clubs across the region.<\/p>\n

The tournament, to be held from August 25\u201330, will feature $70,000 in prize money and is expected to attract a strong field of international and domestic players.<\/p>\n

Host clubs include Alstonville, East Lismore, Evans Head, Lismore Heights and Illuka.<\/p>\n

Cherry Street Sports is also hosting at its Ballina and Lennox Head greens, while the main competition hub will be at the Yamba Bowling Club.<\/p>\n

Open to all competitors, the tournament is expected to deliver a diverse and competitive lineup. There will be ranking points on offer, finalists will also have the chance to boost their standings in the series.<\/p>\n

The Northern Rivers has developed a reputation for attracting state and national champions to tournaments throughout the year.<\/p>\n

Some of the local clubs hosting have produced state and national representatives over the years including current Australian Jackaroos team member Aaron Teys.<\/p>\n

Teys grew up playing at Ballina and Evans Head and is the current Trans-Tasman men’s champion.<\/p>\n

“The Northern Rivers Open will bring together huge prize money, world ranking points, fast formats, epic contests, in an event that’s open to everyone” World Bowls Series manager Chris Wallace said.<\/p>\n

“We know that the clubs in the region will be fantastic hosts.”<\/p>\n

Designed for fast-paced, spectator-friendly action, matches will be played in a one-hour format.<\/p>\n

There will be men and women’s singles with mixed pairs and triples.<\/p>\n

The tournament will also be played after Australian and international bowlers compete at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland in July and August.<\/p>\n
