{"id":115116,"date":"2026-05-12T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-11T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/?p=115116"},"modified":"2026-05-06T17:48:20","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T07:48:20","slug":"bombers-target-new-crop-of-players-to-defend-title","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/news\/bombers-target-new-crop-of-players-to-defend-title\/","title":{"rendered":"Bombers target new crop of players to defend title"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BALLINA Bombers will defend its Northern Rivers Aussie Rules title as the competition returns for its second season.<\/p>\n<p>The competition will run over eight weeks, with each team hosting a round of games from Saturday May 16.<\/p>\n<p>Growing participation is driving hopes of a long-term revival of senior men&#8217;s football in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Tweed Tigers are the only local team still playing in a regular competition with AFL Queensland on the Gold Coast.<\/p>\n<p>Ballina Bombers player-coach Jai Stafford said the team had put together a solid preseason while attracting new players.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re looking forward to it. We&#8217;ve lost about a third of the squad, but we&#8217;ve brought a lot of new guys in,&#8221; Stafford said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s been great so far. Hopefully we can keep growing it and bring some new teams in.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hosting a round is great because there&#8217;s three games and you get to have a good look at everyone else.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Bombers&#8217; home round will be held on May 30, with Byron Bay, Brunswick Heads, Casino, Lennox Head, Lismore and Nimbin competing.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/05\/536277849_1345268817_60380.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"390\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The men&#8217;s grand final will be played at Oakes Oval, Lismore in July. Photos: DC Sports Photography.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The competition has received support from AFL Queensland, with the end goal of clubs returning to a regular winter season in the next few years.<\/p>\n<p>Teams elected to pull out of playing on the Gold Coast last year after struggling to nominate the required two senior men&#8217;s teams per club.<\/p>\n<p>Will Alexander, who plays for the Nimbin Demons and is helping to run the Northern Rivers competition, said strong player numbers reflected increasing interest in the code.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The competition is really growing. We&#8217;re expecting a lot more players this year, which shows how strong Aussie Rules is becoming in the Northern Rivers,&#8221; Alexander said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s exciting to see the mix of traditional clubs and newer teams coming through.
