LISMORE Base Hospital has launched its expanded midwifery service, offering women and families improved access to maternity care through pregnancy and the early postnatal period.<\/p>\n
The model is supported by funding from the state government and allows women to receive care from a known primary midwife from pregnancy through to two weeks after birth.<\/p>\n
It brings together a dedicated team of five midwives working in close collaboration with obstetric, paediatric and allied health professionals to provide coordinated care.<\/p>\n
Nearly 300 women have already chosen or been part of the program which has supported more than 120 babies.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is wonderful to see the benefits already from the expanded midwifery services at Lismore Base Hospital,\u201d Lismore MP Janelle Saffin said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWomen’s health organisations have long advocated for this, for a woman to have skilled and compassionate midwives alongside them throughout the pregnancy, birth and into the early weeks of the baby’s life.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is important support for the woman, the baby and the family.\u201d<\/p>\n
Northern NSW Local Health District maternity services manager Fiona Minnis said evidence supports improved outcomes under midwifery-led care.<\/p>\n
\u201cCurrent evidence shows midwifery-led services enhance outcomes for women and babies. Families are more satisfied with their care, with midwives reporting fewer complications and better breastfeeding outcomes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHaving a known midwife builds a trusted therapeutic relationship. Communication between women and their midwives is strengthened, which improves pregnancy and postnatal experiences.<\/p>\n
