{"id":115902,"date":"2026-06-14T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-13T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/?p=115902"},"modified":"2026-06-14T04:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-06-13T18:00:00","slug":"community-tree-planting-project-at-lennox-headland-reaches-restoration-milestone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/lismoretimes\/news\/community-tree-planting-project-at-lennox-headland-reaches-restoration-milestone\/","title":{"rendered":"Community tree planting project at Lennox headland reaches restoration milestone"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE transformation of Lennox Headland from cleared farmland back into native rainforest has reached a major milestone, with a community planting day marking more than two decades of volunteer restoration work.<\/p>\n<p>The 21st annual tree planting event brought together community members, schools and local groups to continue rebuilding the coastal headland.<\/p>\n<p>What began in 2003 with 20 volunteers planting 140 seedlings has grown into a long-running environmental success, with more than 1,800 volunteers contributing more than 18,000 native plantings across eight hectares.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_126877\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-126877\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-126877\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/06\/IMG_2658_53021.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-126877\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ballina Shire Council were joined by members of the community for the 21st Lennox Head Tree Planting Day. Photo: Mitchell Craig.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The project is a joint effort between Ballina Shire Council, Rous County Council and GeoLINK.<\/p>\n<p>Ballina Shire Council natural resource officer James Brideson said the project had been driven by consistent community effort since its inception.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve been clearing weeds off what was once forest, and then it was cleared for farmland around 200 years ago,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Each year, the local community come together to regenerate this precious coastal environment, helping to restore what was once present pre the 1800s.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_126878\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-126878\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-126878\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/06\/IMG_2655_56126.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-126878\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Children were able to learn about the restoration project and plant new seedlings at the headland. Photo: Mitchell Craig.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Restoring the headland supports threatened ecosystems and creates habitat for native wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>While the upper headland is now largely fully planted, future events will focus on maintaining and enhancing the established rainforest as it continues to mature.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People can really see the effort that they&#8217;ve done just by planting a tree, and the combined effect of lots of people doing that at the same time, over and over,&#8221; Brideson said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The combined effect is that we&#8217;re building a forest that will be here for generations to come.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE transformation of Lennox Headland from cleared farmland back into native rainforest has reached a major milestone, with a community planting day marking more than two decades of volunteer restoration work.
