Photo: Angela Saurine.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander English, &#8220;deadly&#8221; means awesome, brilliant and triumphant rather than dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>Families enjoyed a range of free activities, with children painting boomerangs, learning basket weaving and having their faces painted.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/07\/NAIDOCWeekparadeinBy_17175.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The event began with a parade. Photo: Angela Saurine.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The event was organised by the Bundjalung Byron Bay Aboriginal Corporation (Arakwal) in partnership with Byron Shire Council.<\/p>\n<p>Byron Shire councillor and Bundjalung woman Michelle Lowe said the celebration recognised the courage, leadership, resilience and cultural pride of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, while reflecting on her grandmother&#8217;s generation, who did not always feel safe expressing their identity.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/29\/2026\/07\/SuperintendantChrist_18874.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Superintendant Christopher Schilt, holding an Aboriginal flag, with Cassandra Kelly at NAIDOC Week celebrations.
