Hats off to another wine and food fest
RAIN didn’t dampen the spirits of visitors to the Heathcote Wine and Food Festival with numbers up on last year’s attendance.
Hosted by the Heathcote Winegrowers Association, the annual festival showcases the region’s wine industry and has been running for more than 16 years.
“It was unfortunate it rained later on Saturday afternoon and some people left early,” said president of the Winegrowers Association Ian Hopkins.
“But for the most part we had great weather, and the crowd numbers were up on last year. There was a good vibe amongst stallholders and visitors.
“Many sellers reported increased sales, and, in all, it was another positive event.”
Ali Blood from the Bendigo Hat Shop has attended every festival since it began.
“We are Victoria’s largest hat shop, and I have been coming to the festival from the beginning. I always enjoy it very much; it is a very well-run event.
“My sales were down a little due to the weather but I still love being here.”
The festival included 40 wine vendors from the local area and more than 30 other vendors.
Families enjoyed Games on the Green lawn games, while others relaxed and listened to music provided by Bendigo Blues and Roots.
Sandy and Andy Whytcross started Idavue Estate on the outskirts of Heathcote more than 23 years ago.
“It started as a bare paddock,” said Ms Whytcross, “and I am the only Heathcote-born, female winemaker.
“We always enjoy the festival and despite the rain, wine lovers were out in force.
“There were even quite a few out dancing to the music in the rain.”
