230 years of service celebrated
HEATHCOTE Fire Brigade held their awards afternoon this week honouring the huge commitment of the volunteers.
Recruitment Officer Peter Duncan led proceedings where members were presented with awards for service ranging from five years up to 50 years.
“Heathcote Fire Brigade is in its 122nd year,” he said. “It is a voluntary organisation, and we are all proud to be part of more than six million volunteers in Australia today.
“Without volunteers, Australia would stop. It is their kindness and generosity that keeps the CFA going.
“No one joins for accolades; they just want to help their community. Many of our volunteers also volunteer in other organisations throughout the community and their efforts are much appreciated.
“Thanks doesn’t match the level of effort put in but the awards today are a small way of acknowledging what the members have achieved.”
Mr Duncan recited quotes about volunteerism before the awards for each level of service were presented.
Receiving awards for five years of service were Vicki McNaughton, Evan Pritchard and Sherry Anderson. Ten-year awards went to Jim Staggard, Clint Beatty and Mick Lumsden.
Rory O’Doherty received a 15-year service award and Carmel Duke was acknowledged for 25 years of service.
Merv Hearne and Janet Baker each received awards for 30 years of service and Laraine Leask for 35 years of service.
Carl Watkins, who joined the CFA at 17 years of age was awarded for his 50 years of service.
Mr Watkins enjoys the camaraderie of the CFA and passing on his years of knowledge.
