A lesson in fire safety
CFA members attended Heathcote Primary School last week for a bonfire and a fun and practical lesson in fire safety.
Principal Carolyn Crowther hopes the bonfire will become an annual event.
“We had a community working bee in September and part of this included collecting sticks for a bonfire,” said principal Carolyn Crowther.
“It signalled the end of ‘cubby building season’ where a lot of the sticks came from.
“It also helped prepare for fire and snake season by clearing the yard of logs, sticks and branches.
“A CFA member and parent helped identify a good location for the bonfire prior to the working bee.
“Then, last week, the weather was on our side and the bonfire could be set alight.”
CFA members attended showing students the best way to prepare an area for burning off.
“They wet down the area prior to lighting the fire, set the bonfire alight and stayed back to make sure the fire was completely extinguished,” said Ms Crowther.
“We really appreciate their support and hope to make the working bee, the bonfire and connecting with the CFA an annual event.
“We were also very grateful to McIvor Meats who donated 200 sausages for a sausage sizzle to feed the hungry worker bees.
“One student exclaimed, ‘These are the best sausages ever!’ and quite a few students had thirds.”
