All-abilities play space for school

STUDENTS at Huntly Primary School will soon be able to play in a new accessible space.

More than $156,000 from the State Government’s Inclusive Schools Fund will go towards extending Huntly Primary’s playground to make it more inclusive for all children.

Principal Jason Lee said he was excited for what it will bring to the yard.

“It allows us to extend the existing playground so that we have ramps, areas where they can play at a low level that aren’t too high. It will make access easier for all students,” he said.

“The school population is growing. We know we need to be as inclusive as we can. This allows us to extend on our junior playground, making it an all-abilities playground.

“This will help us support any student who enrols in the school. It’s important for us to be inclusive across all areas of the school and this is just one area.

“We do have some students with disabilities, but this is more about being proactive and making sure that when we do get students who are in wheelchairs that they can access these facilities.”

Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan visited the school on Monday and said the upgrades will make the school a more welcoming place.

“It means it’s an inclusive schoolground for students of all abilities to be able to be able to enjoy their lunchtime, their recess time, and other activities,” she said.

“It’s an important part of making sure our schools are accessible for all students.”

Mr Lee said he hopes to see the playground constructed by early next year.
