PAST students, family members and friends of the former Mia Mia Primary School gathered at the Mia Mia Hall last weekend for a reunion.

Attendees travelled from as far away as Queensland and Tasmania.

Organisers Chris McGrath and Maureen Charville spent six months planning the event and were pleased with the attendance.

During the afternoon, attendees walked to the former school building, which is now privately owned, for a tour and photos.

Three generations of the O’Sullivan family attended the Mia Mia primary School reunion.

Mia Mia Primary School opened in 1869 and closed in 1991 when it merged with Redesdale Primary School.

“It was a great afternoon,” said Judy Knight.

“It was good to meet up with so many ex-students and people I hadn’t seen for years.

“My four children, Sue, Ross, Kay and Melissa all attended Mia Mia Primary School.

“The whole school community was very involved with activities, and my children all enjoyed their time there.

Research officer and museum curator of the Heathcote Historic Society, Elizabeth Murfitt said the reunion unearthed a treasure trove of historical information.

“I remember when the book mobile used to come to Mia Mia for the students and the wider community.

“It was always a big thing for both the kids and the adults.”

Former student Ian Shiel attended the school with Ms Knight’s son Ross.

Mr Shiel travelled from Tasmania to attend the reunion with his siblings who now live in Melbourne.

“I wouldn’t have missed it,” he said. “My father was the head teacher here and he was well known for planning great activities.

“There were lots of school concerts and productions in the hall.

“The reunion has brought back some great memories.”
