Camaraderie and craftsmanship

OPEN every Tuesday and Wednesday, Heathcote Men’s Shed provides a space where men of all ages can come together, share and learn skills, and build friendships.
The shed, at the rear of Heathcote Hospital, is well-equipped with tools, machinery and supplies.
“We make the most of what we have,” said president Max Donovan.
“A lot of machinery and tools are donated by generous members of the community.
“We use what we need and repair and sell other items.
“During the warmer months we have a stall at the monthly Lions Market where we sell things we’ve made; everything from bird houses and nest boxes to metal garden art and planters.”

The initial build committee for Heathcote Men’s Shed was formed in April 2018 but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, plans were held up until it was officially opened in April 2020.
Since then, members of the group have worked on personal pieces, special orders and community projects.
A place where men can come together, join in activities and talk about whatever is on their mind, it plays an important role in promoting positive men’s physical and mental health.
Following a private request for a piece of work earlier this year, men’s shed members completed a large coat of arms just in time for Anzac Day.
“There was a lot of commitment from the guys helping move and lift the sheets of steel as well as painting and assisting in cutting the many pieces out and grinding,” Terry Hoctor said.
“As we have several ex-servicemen amongst our members it’s a timely reminder that as time goes on, they are not forgotten and we appreciate their camaraderie.
“We were very happy with the completed project.”

There are currently 37 members of the men’s shed.
“We have a large contingent of regular attendees and would love to welcome more men,” Donovan said.
“There are plans to extend the building to accommodate more projects and the tea room.
“We always appreciate donations of tools and equipment, and it is amazing what great art pieces can be made from otherwise discarded items.”
The Heathcote Men’s Shed is open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9am to 2pm at 39 Hospital Street.
Members enjoy a sausage sizzle every Wednesday.
