RESIDENTS at Heathcote Health Aged Care will have the opportunity to have their biographies written thanks to an innovative volunteer organisation.

Beyond Words is a not-for-profit initiative, celebrating and enriching the lives of older people.

Duncan McGann recently began writing Heathcote Health Aged Care resident Beverley Grubb’s biography.

“Basically, the process involves spending an hour each week with the clients, for around six to eight weeks,” said Mr McGann.

“I record their reminiscences and transcribe them.

“Once all the information is gathered, the stories the client has told me are organised into a cohesive narrative.

“Photos and other documents can be added, and the life story is printed as a book and presented to the client.”

Mr McGann said residents in aged care have a lot to gain from having their life stories published.

“It captures the stories of their life and times that might otherwise be lost, it allows them to reflect on their life and achievements, and it is something for future generations to treasure,” he said.

“There is a lot of self-worth to be gained in having your life story told.

“Being a former teacher, I absolutely love writing these biographies as it combines my two loves of history and English.

“The stories I am told are a fascinating glimpse into Australia’s past, and I love the dignity it gives the client in being able to tell them.

“Everyone’s life is interesting if you look deep enough, and often people have lived extraordinary lives.

“As well as writing the biographies, I assess aged care residents for their suitability for being involved in the program and help with the training of new biographers.”
