A GROUP of current and former Heathcote residents have been meeting for lunch twice a year for the past 18 years.
This week, 36 friends, who call themselves Heathcotites, met at the Bendigo RSL to catch up.
“Sadly, each time we meet there are less able to attend,” said Rex Stewart. “Some have passed while others are unwell and can’t make it.
“At our biggest gathering a few years ago we had more than 60 people attending. We usually average about 40 people.”
The group began meeting after a funeral eighteen years ago.
“We didn’t want to just meet at funerals,” said local resident Grant Baker. “So, we decided to meet up twice a year in Bendigo.
“It is great to catch up and we all look forward to it.”
Margaret McMahon is married to Maurice McMahon who grew up in Heathcote.
“Everyone treats me like a local now,” she said. “But I’m really a blow-in.
“After we married, we lived in Heathcote for 31 years before moving to Strathdale.

“Back then I was known as Maurice’s wife or Elsie and Pat’s daughter-in-law.
“You weren’t a local unless you were born there.”
Barry Height travelled the longest distance to attend the latest gathering.
“I have never missed one,” he said. “I love catching up with my old mates from school, football and cricket.
“We talk about old times and sadly remember those who are no longer with us.
“I live in Melbourne now but still think of Heathcote as home.
“My mum was born in Heathcote and her mum, too.”
The friends meet up in May and October of each year, usually on the second or third Tuesday.
“Our next gathering will be on 21 October,” said Mr Stewart.
