HEATHCOTE Bowling Club will open its greens to the public on Saturday evening, inviting residents to try lawn bowls during a free community event.
The come-and-try session will begin at 5pm and include barefoot bowls, music and a barbecue.
DJ Steve will provide entertainment as attendees are introduced to the game and meet club members.

“It will be a great opportunity for anyone who has ever wanted to try bowling,” co-organiser Adam Luxford said. “Bowling is accessible, anyone can have a go.
“No experience is necessary. Entry is free.
“There will be some great music, a free barbecue and attendees can learn more about bowling from club members.”
Mr Luxford said lawn bowls had played a significant role in his life since he started playing 18 years ago.

“I’ve made some great friendships over the years,” he said. “There are some from when I first started bowling.”
The club is using the event to encourage new members, with free social memberships, normally $30 per year, available on the night.
“We live in a growing, bustling town and we’d like to build the club membership,” Mr Luxford said.
“Both new and long-term residents will have the opportunity to try the game in a relaxed atmosphere.
“Membership has dropped a little over the past couple of years and we’d like to build it up again.

“At present there are about 70 members, and it would be great to build that number up to 100.”
Heathcote Bowling Club, established in 1904, has two synthetic greens and regularly hosts barefoot bowls and pennant competitions.
No booking is required for the free event, which will be held at the club’s Herriot Street grounds from 5pm.
