MEMBERS of Heathcote’s Community Reference Group were thrilled to see residents enjoying the township’s reopened swimming pool last weekend.

The group had been working with the City of Greater Bendigo and Belgravia Leisure to have the pool reopened.

Almost 300 people went through the gate on Saturday and more than 200 on Sunday.

Residents of all ages flocked to the pool embracing social, fitness and health benefits.

“It was a fantastic opening day,” reference group member Karla Douglas said.

“The scenes were wonderful to see after the belated start to the swimming season.

“The joy of a young toddler, in goggles and vest, jumping in and being caught by mum; delighted lap swimmers, lane ropes in place.

“I saw many families and friends walking in with picnics or fish and chips.

“It was a relaxed atmosphere with music, coloured inflatables, laughter, quiet reading in the shade of the trees and the barbecue going – the soundtrack of summer.

“All ages enjoying time together in the great outdoors.”

The pool closed almost 12 months ago after some patrons reported receiving electric shocks.

Ms Douglas was at the pool and talked to patrons, who gave the opening a tick of approval.

“One lady told me she had really missed the pool,” Ms Douglas said.

“She said it is so good for her mental health.

“Another lady said she really appreciated it as it helps to get her legs moving.

“I talked to a man from Bendigo who had been following the story of our pool and came over for the opening.

“DJ Brooksy provided some great music, which added to the atmosphere.

“Our pool is a real oasis in the oppressive heat.”

Ms Douglas thanked the community for their support

Local mother Jamie Villella attended the opening with her two children Angus and Sophie.

“It’s been a pretty sad summer until now,” she said.

“It’s so great to see the pool open.”

Starting today and continuing on 13 and 27 February and 13 March, the pool will host community nights.

Picnic blankets will be available from 4pm or patrons can bring their own.

Pool opening hours for the rest of the season are: Monday and Tuesday 10am to 7pm; Wednesday to Friday 2pm to 7pm; and weekends from noon to 7pm.
