Dementia Support Australia have specially developed local dementia support events coming to Bendigo on Thursday 14 August.

DEMENTIA Support Australia extends an invitation to family carers of people living with dementia and health and aged care professionals, to attend tailored information events in Bendigo and surrounding areas on August 14.

“Supporting a person living with dementia can be daunting and at times can feel overwhelming,” said executive general manager for Dementia Support Australia, Mark Peacock.

“This event is for carers who want to know how to manage changing behaviours in a person living with dementia, while providing a safe and supportive environment for that person.”

An estimated 110,600 people are living with dementia in Victoria, many of them in regional areas. Two out of three people living with dementia are in the community – usually at home – and 54 per cent of people in residential aged care are living with dementia.

Dementia Support Australia is a free advisory and support service funded by the Australian Government and led by HammondCare, a national leader in dementia care, support and research.

Dementia Support Australia have specially developed local dementia support events, which aim to provide carers with insightful information and practical advice from dementia experts. Participants will meet with like-minded carers, be given clear help and advice from dementia professionals and network with people within their community.

“Our dementia consultants and specialists will share practical insights on mood and behaviour changes, carer well-being, relationship-based approaches in dementia care and when, and how, to seek help,” Mr Peacock said.

“We urge carers in the community in the Bendigo region to join us on August 14, for the valuable information, tools and resources we offer, and also because it is helpful to share your experiences with other carers.”

Marie Alford, general manager, growth and innovation, HammondCare, said, “A family carer who attended one of our recent workshops told us: ‘Thank you. I learnt a lot. I felt seen.’

“Another said: ‘Everything was very well explained and the content was very relevant and I will be able to utilise a lot of the knowledge gained today.’

“For professional carers, so much is changing so quickly in the field of treating and managing complex dementia, these events are really valuable for hearing updates from our dementia specialists and raising practical issues with those experts.”

The Bendigo events will be held at Lakeside Hotel.
