A RARE rail journey across the heart of Australia is being offered to local travellers, with Geelong Travel director Stuart Coffield unveiling a one-off 2027 charter aboard the legendary The Ghan.
Coffield said the exclusive departure would take passengers from Darwin to Geelong, delivering a premium, fully hosted experience through some of the country’s most remote and varied landscapes.

The charter will depart on 29 October 2027, combining four nights onboard The Ghan Expedition with a series of guided off-train experiences across the Northern Territory and South Australia.
Coffield said the itinerary had been designed to showcase the country’s changing landscapes, from the tropical north through the red centre and into South Australia.
Stops along the way include Katherine, Alice Springs, opal mining town Coober Pedy and Adelaide, where experiences are tailored to the landscape and local character of each destination.

The package includes one night’s accommodation in Darwin prior to departure, a sunset dinner cruise, all meals and beverages onboard, and a series of curated stops and guided experiences along the route.
A visit to Monarto Safari Park in South Australia, paired with a hosted lunch, also forms part of the journey.
Coffield said while The Ghan runs regular services, charters of this kind were uncommon and typically filled quickly.

The decision to finish the journey in Geelong was a point of difference, particularly for Victorian travellers, Coffield said.
The announcement continues a strong period for Coffield and his team at Geelong Travel, which was recently named Australia’s top-performing agency at the national APT Travel Group awards.
Coffield said demand for experience-led travel remained strong, particularly for itineraries that offered something beyond standard departures.
