AFTER eight years, the final MND Superchallenge Bowls event will be held on Australia Day this year at Heathcote Bowling Club, with organisers hoping it will be even bigger than in previous years.

The event has raised more than $100,000 since it began in 2015.

“It is time to bring the MND Dennis Gleeson Superchallenge Bowls event to a close,” said Heathcote Bowling Club secretary Peter Cunningham.

“But not before one last hurrah.

“It is our intention to make this final event even bigger than in the past and we hope to raise another significant amount.”

A small but enthusiastic group of volunteers, the Never Give Up Group, was formed by members of the bowling club after one member was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease.

“The challenge was named in honour of popular local farmer, all-round sportsman and good bloke, Dennis Gleeson,” said Mr Cunningham.

“The event may pass into history but his memory will never fade.

“All good things must come to an end, so it is with some sadness but also great pride in our achievement that the Dennis Gleeson Challenge will take to the greens for the last time.”

Following the tournament, an auction will be held with significant items for sale, including a Collingwood football jumper, signed by all grand final players.

“We will also have a raffle with the major prize a garden tools package from Total Tools, valued at $5000.”

Anyone wanting to attend the day or wishing to donate to the auction, is asked to contact Peter Cunningham on 0418 304 259 or Brian Taylor on 0419 305 997.
