Good old-fashioned quality and service

OLD Thyme Grocer will open its doors on Monday selling a range of farm fresh produce and other local products.
The venture is a family affair for Ben Shields.
“Mum bought the shop but at first we weren’t sure what we would use it for,” said Shields.
“Heathcote already had a butcher and bakeries, and in the end, we decided on a green grocery store as we all like growing things.
“We will be selling fresh fruit and vegetables, local jams, honey, oils, olives and sauces, organic dairy products, hand-blended teas, flowers, gift hampers, nuts and more.
“Everyone has had a part to play as we work towards the opening.
“Dad has been helping to get the shop ready, Mum has been continuously on her computer helping to organise things and my sister Kirstylee and niece Scarlett will be on hand to help in the shop.”
While the shop will stock bio organic and certified organic produce, the main aim is to sell good quality food.
“Our mission is to source and engage with local growers and makers who share our values and to understand their practices,” said Shields.
“While some products are not available locally, we will be endeavouring to source from within 40 minutes from Heathcote as much as we can.
“Included in our stock will be locally made Dalhousie jams and sauces, local oils and honey.”
Kirstylee Shields said many people have told her they travel to Castlemaine or Kyneton to access organic products.
“Life is busy and having a range of products here will reduce the need to travel,” she said.
“Hopefully, it will also create a ripple effect with people buying our produce, then continuing on to the butcher and bakeries.”
Ben Shields worked for Australia Post for 20 years before moving to Heathcote, then worked at a local winery and other small businesses.
“I have a new respect for farmers after talking and working with them,” he said.
“It is very often back-breaking work in all seasons.”
Local resident Linda Cornelissen is looking forward to the opening.
“While I do shop in supermarkets, I also like to support local individuals and businesses,” she said.
“Fresh fruit and vegetables have been missing from our town for a long time.”
Old Thyme Grocer is at 76 High Street, Heathcote.
