COMMUNITY groups joined with local residents on International Volunteers Day last week for Walk for Respect (Heathcote Respects) and Coffee with a Cop at Heathcote Community House.

Erica Watson from Mother Bean provided the coffee for Coffee with a Cop.

After taking a stroll along the Wonderwalk and meeting some of the residents at Heathcote Health Aged Care, attendees enjoyed coffee with members of the police force, free health checks, and gained emergency preparedness information from members of the SES and CFA.

SES volunteers Ali Sarisandal, Peter Duncan (back), Mo Alabdulkarim and Sally Duncan were on hand to give locals some advice.

New CEO at Heathcote Health Jackie Kelly said she was pleased to see so many people engaging with the local community groups

“The commitment from so many community groups is great to see,” she said.

“I was really glad to join the Walk for Respect which sends an important message of support to local families.”

A brush with the law: Heathcote Health Aged Care residents Bev and Rob were pleased to meet Sergeant Holly Lembke from Heathcote Police.

Sindy Stevens and Ashlee Wickes attended from MIND Bendigo.

“We offer free mental health and support in Heathcote each Tuesday at Heathcote Health,” said Ms Stevens.

“No doctor’s referral or Medicare card is required for any adults aged 26-plus who need support.”

Holly Lembke met with community house volunteers, Charlie Miller and Sandra Runagall, who walk with aged care residents every Friday morning starting at 9.30.

Volunteers from Heathcote Fire Brigade and SES Heathcote Unit attended, giving advice on safety and what to do in emergencies.

“There has been a fantastic turn-up today,” said Sally Duncan from the SES.

Local police met with residents over coffee to discuss safety and issues concerning the community.

“It is good to see so many different groups attending.

“I love being a volunteer in a community that values our volunteers.”
