HEATHCOTE Health is calling for volunteers for the organisation’s Meals on Wheels program.

There are also other volunteer roles available.

“HH Meals on Wheels is currently supporting around 30 local residents and delivering 300 meals per month,” said community service nurse unit manager Gerry Canny.

“There is an ever-increasing demand for this service and we continue to receive new referrals to the program each week.

“Other volunteering opportunities also exist within our social support group.

“Our social support group participate in various centre-based activities, as well as out and about’ trips to local events, attractions and eateries.

“Volunteers work alongside our experienced coordinators to provide care, support and vital social connection to our clients.”

Heathcote Health provides a car for Meals on Wheels volunteers as well as training and support, including induction on the use of the electric cars.

“The service plays an important role in early intervention and health prevention, allowing older Australians to live in their homes for longer,” said volunteer coordinator Michelle Chapman.

People give their time for services weekly, fortnightly or monthly and some of those who take part say they get as much out of it as they give.

“For newbies to town it’s a fabulous way to learn about Heathcote,” said Mel Matyson, who volunteers once a week.

“You meet some amazing locals and make great friends amongst the volunteers.”

Jackie Matthews said it is more than just delivering meals.

“We love it. As well as the meals we often swap recipes and plant cuttings,” she said. “We check letterboxes and put bins out. It all helps.”

The deliveries are done in pairs, with a driver and jockey.

“It’s not a big commitment and such a good cause,” said volunteer Sue Pace. “It never takes more than two hours.

“The recipients make you feel so welcome and give you such a sense of worth.”
