Highschoolers bring back the bend and snap

THE iconic story of Elle Woods is being recreated for the stage by the students of Bendigo South East College.

Production director Jorja Polglase said she chose Legally Blonde the Musical for its positive messages.

“We picked Legally Blonde because it’s really modern and super fun, there’s really catchy songs and the main message of the show is that you don’t need to fall into stereotypes,” Polglase said.

“The message of empowerment is what really drew me into want to direct this with kids, because I think they can get a lot out of being in it.”

The musical features songs and dance routines based on memorable scenes from the film, including the bend and snap.

“The choreographer is Taylor Chisholm and it’s her first time choreographing a major musical,” Polglase said.

“Her choreography is amazing, the kids have picked it up so well and bend and snap is a showstopper.”

Year 9 student Matilda Woods is taking on the role of Elle, alongside Ralphie the mini-foxy x chihuahua who will play Bruiser.

“He’s been at the maybe last six rehearsals just getting to know the cast and he is absolutely so cute,” Woods said.

The cast of 40 students from years 7 to 10 have been rehearsing since term 2.

“They’re so talented for young kids and they’ve got really bright futures ahead of them if they’re already this talented at this age,” Polglase said.

The show opens 27 October at 7pm at the Capital, followed by two shows on 28 October.
