DID you know Heathcote will be turning 175 years old in 2028?

The Heathcote McIvor Historical Society is forming a committee and calling for expressions of interest from groups and individuals interested in participating in celebrations.

“This is a significant milestone for Heathcote, providing the opportunity – and we have the time – to create a whole-of community celebration.” society member Ralph Watkins said.

“A strong community honours its heritage, so this keen group would like to gauge community interest.

“Hopefully a steering committee will emanate, which will be creating and guiding the 175th anniversary.

“Such an affair needs to be a whole of community celebration, augmenting and showcasing community organisations forming the rich tapestry of Heathcote.

“It is an opportunity for community connectivity and resilience in trilogy, giving homage to our past, celebrating what is our present, and eagerly anticipating the future.

“The initiating committee considers it a goal that there be two aspects of the anniversary: community event, and a more permanent physical edifice assisting in building future community capacity, but all based on the guiding principle of the historic theme.

“If interested they will all be welcome to come on board.”

Mr Watkins said he would welcome involvement and suggestions from community groups, sporting clubs, schools and churches.

“It doesn’t matter if people were born here or are new residents,” he said.

“It will be a time of celebration for everyone.”

Heathcote Historic Society research officer/museum curator Elizabeth Murfitt said she hopes shop owners, businesses and community groups will be willing to participate.

“There is a wide range of different businesses, interest groups and organisations in Heathcote,” she said.

“We would like to celebrate and showcase the unique part each one plays in Heathcote’s history.”

Initiating committee members will meet again on 4 March at 10.30am at the Heathcote McIvor Historical Society Museum, 19 Herriot Street.
