MORE than 280 people attended the 13th annual Heathcote International Short Film Festival last weekend and plans are already underway for an even bigger event next year.

Friday evening saw the popular Picnic and Popcorn event, and on Saturday a gala dinner, as attendees watched a rich selection of short films from all over the world.

“The organising committee were thrilled with both the quality and number of entries submitted this year,” said committee member Duncan McGann.

“We received seventy-four submissions ranging across a spectrum from comedy to tragedy.

“The committee then whittled this down to the 12 films shown on each night of the event.

“The submissions came from far and wide, including films from Nigeria, Spain, The Netherlands, and of course from our home-grown filmmakers.

“Many of the films selected have won awards in their home country and enjoyed their Australian premier at the Heathcote festival.

“There were also many entries this year from emerging filmmakers, seeking to grow their skills and exposure.”

Mr McGann said the committee was pleased to have so many entries from emerging artists.

“Festivals like this provide a platform for them to hone their craft,” he said.

“We were privileged to host young directors Lousie Dickins (Wise Words) and Kiko Wayne Jr. (People Like You) who both produced challenging films dealing with different forms of discrimination.

“It was lovely to see them engage with the audience to discuss their craft.”

Mr McGann praised the spirit of the Heathcote community.

“As ever, the generosity of the Heathcote business community was acknowledged and much appreciated,” he said.

“Without our sponsors the festival would simply not be able to run.”

With this year’s festival concluded, planning begins for an even bigger festival for next year.
