FREE blinds safety kits are now available through Consumer Affairs Victoria.
All residential rental properties must have secured cords on all internal wall coverings.
Children can strangle themselves with unsecured curtain and blind cords. Twenty-one young people have died since 2021.
Member for Euroa Annabelle Cleeland is encouraging residents to take advantage of the offer to help prevent serious accidents in the home.
Each kit includes 10 safety devices, screws and easy-to-follow instructions.
“Unsecured blind and curtain cords are a serious safety risk and can have devastating consequences for young children,” Ms Cleeland said.
“Tragically, these hazards contribute to the deaths of up to two Australian children each year. Securing cords is a simple step that can make a life-saving difference.”
Residents can request a free kit online through Consumer Affairs Victoria at forms.consumer.vic.gov.au/cb
Anyone who does not have internet access can obtain help through Ms Cleeland’s electorate office at 25 Bridge St, Benalla. Staff will help to request a kit.
“Home safety is something we should all take seriously,” Ms Cleeland said.
“I encourage families across our region with blinds or curtains to take advantage of this free kit and help keep children safe in their homes.”
