PARTICIANTS at the community house pickling and fermenting workshop last weekend learnt how to pickle their own veggies.
The workshop was facilitated by Melanie from Open Table and hosted by community house and Healthy Loddon Campaspe.
“We received fantastic feedback on the workshop,” said community house executive officer Vicki Forde.
“Melanie, from Open Table, was a delight.”
Open Table is a not-for-profit registered charity which aims to provide fresh, healthy food to the community whilst reducing food waste and decreasing food insecurity.
“We learnt basic recipes for sauerkraut and pickled veggies and everyone was pleased with the results and the jar of pickled veggies they took home,” said Ms Forde.
“Melanie gave us many tips and there were lots of questions from participants about what you can pickle and what you can’t.
“We were given tasty suggestions on serving pickled veggies and firm fruit and other ways of minimising food waste, such as freezing, creative salads and other cooking ideas.
“We will be back again at the community house with another free workshop on 24 May from 10am to 11.30am, once again highlighting zero waste cooking with vegie fritters and pickling.
“We are very grateful to Healthy Loddon Campaspe for helping us bring these fantastic workshops to Heathcote.”
